On Thu 30 & Fri 31 May, one of Europe's most creative and dynamic companies in the field of contemporary dance can be seen. GöteborgsOperans Danskompani brings a double bill of existing work, their big hit Skid by the French/Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet. And so a new choreography by none other than Hofesh Shechter.
Skid, with a dance floor tilted 34°, challenges the dancers beyond gravity. This results in blood-curdling situations, powerful images and unexpectedly moving moments. Or in the words of choreographer Jalet: “It's about dancers who master the uncontrollable”.
The dancers slowly slide down the slope and its unhurried, repetitive nature gives it a hypnotic, bizarre beauty. Once the music becomes more assertive, louder and more rhythmic, the setting also changes radically and the dancers emerge from the bottom, climb, slide and climb again. The change of light intensifies the shadows, making the whole almost look like a moving silhouette game.
