Carlos Acosta - widely regarded as one of the best dancers of his generation - finally brings his Cuban dance company Acosta Danza to the Netherlands. With Cuban Eclectico, the audience can sample everything this unique group of versatile dancers has to offer, from modern dance to Afro-Cuban folk dance: 'It's a sample of Cuban life.'
Official premiere
Walk in on the red carpet and take selfies in front of the photo wall where the dancers of Acosta Danza almost jump out at you. In Cuba, people always dress festively when they go out for a night out. Since this premiere performance is also really a night out, the dress code is festive - cocktail. Tuxedo or dark suit or cocktail dress is certainly possible, but with a festive glamour outfit you will fit right into the premiere atmosphere. At the premiere coffee, tea and drinks are included and we serve delicious snacks.
After the performance you are welcome to toast with a glass of bubbly during a sparkling after-party in the foyer. Or go wild and dance to the Caribbean sounds of Latin-Salsa band Descarga Timbera, who will keep the Cuban vibe going for a while longer in Luxor Rotterdam.
Taste of Cuba
Carlos Acosta combines a mix of exceptionally talented Cuban dancers with both classical and modern dance techniques. He mixes these techniques with flamenco, capoeira and hip-hop. The result is Acosta's own identity in which the rich Cuban culture clearly emerges. For Cuban Eclectico Carlos Acosta invites various choreographers who create pieces inspired by Cuban culture, but with their own twist.
Latin footwork and classic ballet lines
The celebrated Swedish Pontus Lidberg choreographed Paysage, Soudain, la nuit. Set to a rumba-inspired score by Leo Brouwer, Lidberg shows the celebration of youth between dusk and dawn. Eighteen minutes of pure, infectious energy and Latin footwork set to frenzied, traditional music.
Of an entirely different caliber is Satori by Cuban choreographer Raúl Reinoso, which fuses contemporary dance with classical ballet lines. The piece illustrates a journey inward, toward spiritual enlightenment, toward the discovery of truth, beauty and light.
Man and animal
Flemish-Moroccan Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is one of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers in the world. He is known for his imaginative productions that shed new light on cultures and genres of movement. In his interpretation of Faun, he gives shape to the confrontation between the human and animal aspects. This duet shows the duality of male and female energies, which discover and stir up each other.
Havana's Malecón
Cuban Eclectico concludes with choreographer Alexis Fernández's De Punta a Cabo, created for the complete ensemble of dancers. Set against a projection of Havana's dazzlingly beautiful waterfront, the Malecón, this piece shows all the contradictions of today's Cuban society. From classical dance to salsa and pointe shoes to bare feet here you see a representation of the melting pot of the Cuban race.
In continuation of the successful Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2019, the internationally celebrated Acosta Danza is now back exclusively at the Nieuwe Luxor Theater Rotterdam.
In partnership with Luxor Theater Rotterdam and Stichting Droom en Daad.
The Acosta Danza performances are the result of a multi-year collaboration between Holland Dance Festival, Luxor Theater Rotterdam and Droom en Daad to bring to Rotterdam exclusive dance performances that are not normally seen in the Netherlands. Acosta Danza will be performed for the first time in the Netherlands exclusively at the Nieuwe Luxor Theater Rotterdam.
